Five things you need to know before getting lip fillers

Lip fillers are fast becoming one of the most popular cosmetic treatments. They may not be permanent or invasive, but you still need to be sure that you want them. Here are the five crucial questions to ask yourself before
getting lip fillers.

What's in lip fillers?

Hyaluronic acid and collagen are the two most common types of dermal filler used on lips. They are both naturally occurring substances in the skin which diminish with age. Collagen simply plumps the lips, while hyaluronic acid gives them more volume and definition. The effects of collagen last three to four months, while the effects of hyaluronic acid last about four to six months.

Who can administer lip injections?

Finding a practitioner who you trust is very important. They should be qualified and perform the injections in a clean, safe environment. It’s important to do your research and, if possible, read reviews or testimonials. The person you choose to carry out your lip fillers should be able to answer any questions or queries you have.

What happens if it goes wrong?

Having lip fillers is a simple, straightforward procedure which rarely goes wrong. With collagen fillers, around 1-3% of people have an allergic reaction, but it is exceptionally rare to have an allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid. If something does go wrong or you just don’t like the result, hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed by removing them with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

What happens during the procedure?

Getting lip filler injections usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour. You will probably have the option of numbing the area with an anaesthetic cream or injection. However, even if you choose not to have anaesthetic, the procedure might feel uncomfortable but not painful. There is likely to be a small amount of swelling or bruising for around 24 hours afterwards – it’s a good idea to keep out of the sun and avoid hot drinks.

How should I prepare for getting lip fillers?

You should have an in-depth conversation with the person who will be carrying out your lip fillers, and tell them about any prescribed medicines that you’re taking. You should discuss the effect you are hoping for to make sure you have realistic expectations of the end result.
We would recommend not booking an appointment to get lip fillers just before an important event, as there is likely to be a small amount of swelling or bruising which needs a day to settle.

If you are considering any kind of cosmetic procedure, it is important to understand your own reasons for wanting it done. We recommend asking yourself these five questions before undergoing a cosmetic treatment, as they will help you work out whether it’s definitely the right thing to do and ensure you find the right healthcare professional.
