Anterior placenta refers to the location of the placenta within the uterus. Most of the time, a fertilized egg will attach itself in the posterior uterus — the part closest to the spine, which is where the placenta eventually develops, too. Sometimes, though, the egg implants on the opposite side of the uterus, closest to the abdomen. When the placenta forms, in that case, it grows on the front (or anterior) side of the uterus, with the baby behind it.

What are the Symptoms of Anterior Placenta?
Movements will only be felt down low and to the sides. The care provider might also take a while to find the baby’s heartbeat with the use of a handheld Doppler in the first or the second trimester. Some women panic especially if the waiting is too long or sometimes no heartbeat had been found at all and later assume the worst scenarios in their mind. When someone has an anterior placenta and the baby’s movements are also cushioned due to this, it means that anyone with a placenta in this same type of position will most-likely feel the first movements a little longer compared to other positions.

What Causes Anterior Placenta?
There is no cause for an anterior placenta for it only means that the placenta settled on the front wall of the uterus with the baby behind it. It is common and most do not cause any complications at all. The vast majority of low-lying placentas do move into the upper segment by delivery time, which puts it safely out of the baby's way. If it doesn't, a diagnosis of placenta previa is made, a condition that occurs in only about one out of 200 pregnancies. However, if no first movements had been felt by the 24th week already, the mother should probably have it checked for fetal assessment. Having an anterior placenta can also mean that fewer movements in the second trimester are felt, unlike if the position of the placenta was different.
